SYC was founded in 1941 by a small group of local sailing enthusiasts with homemade boats shortly after Lake Shawnee was constructed. Over the years it developed into a well-known Midwest sailing venue, hosting weekly club races, local and regional regattas, and occasionally national and even North-American championship regattas.
